Stained vs painted cabinets

The biggest difference between stained vs cabinets comes down to the finish styles, durability, and lifestyle.

Stained Cabinets

Stained cabinets display the intrinsic beauty of natural wood grain and makes a stunning impact in the kitchen space. Most stained cabinets will use solid wood or wood-grain veneer base with common natural wood tones such as tans and browns, and grey stains becoming increasingly popular. Stained cabinets are also better at concealing the damage done to them compared to painted cabinets which is an advantage long term. Stained cabinets also have more natural color variations meaning that a few scratches or blemishes aren’t easy to see. If you consider yourself more of a traditionalist, darker wood stained cabinets such as walnut, oak, and cherry might better suit your taste.

PAINTED CABINETS

On the other hand, a painted cabinet might use an MDF base to provide a smooth surface finish. An MDF makes a more stable substrate for the paint to be applied and tends to cause less cracking on the surface. For painted cabinets, popular colors include whites, gray, teal, navy blue, or seafoam green. When it comes to durability, painted cabinets are more resistant to damage largely due to the paint layer adding protection from scratches. However, although painted cabinets may be initially more protected, any slight scratches in the finish will show up more easily and be more visible. If your sense of interior design leans towards the contemporary style, painted cabinets might serve your taste in colors like light and dark grey, or a white yellow wood stain, giving it a modern feel.
